Inline Water Heater

Many homeowners are deciding to go with a new inline water heater opposed to the traditional tank-style water heater. The inline water heater is installed along the water line, as the name suggests, and heats the water as it travels from the water source to the faucet.

It does not have a large tank to fill and heat water in, which means it isn’t running continuously like tank-style water heaters do to maintain the temperature of the water.

Inline water heaters are far more energy efficient and environmentally friendly than tank-style water heaters. Since they only run when the hot water is running, they can greatly decrease your monthly heating bill. The amount you can save will vary. However, if you use 41 gallons or less each day, you can save from 24% to 34%. If you use between 41 and 86 gallons of water per day, you will likely save between 8% and 14%. Your best bet is to use multiple smaller inline water heaters. Doing this can save you between 27% and 50% each month. Inline water heaters are also considered environmentally friendly because they use so much less energy than tank-style water heaters. There are two types of inline water heaters.

Point of use inline water heater: This type can be attached to one specific water source. For example, they are great for the kitchen sink, a shower, a remote outdoor sinks, pool house showers, outdoor hot tubs, or to be used inside the house to boost the hot water at faucets positioned far from the hot water tank. They can be used for dishwashers and utility sinks. You can be sure that your dishwasher has instant 170 degree F water at all times. You won’t have to waste water waiting for it to get hot with an inline water heater.

Whole house inline water heater: This type of inline water heater completely replaces the need for a tank-style hot water heater. It can provide hot water to multiple water sources through out the house at the same time. For example, you can run two showers at the same time or the dishwasher and the washing machine at the same time, and both sources will have equally hot water. The hot water will be available instantly, and it won’t run out. You don’t have to hurry through the shower for fear it will switch to cold before you’re done.

Because an inline water heater is clearly more energy efficient then the traditional tank-style hot water heater, customers having them installed in their home are eligible for a tax rebate of up to 30% of the purchase and installation price through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

The size of the inline water heater you’ll need will be effected by the temperature of your groundwater. Since the temperature of your groundwater is your starting point when heating water, it will determine how much the inline water heater will have to heat the water to get it to your desired temperature. However, this isn’t something you will need to figure out on your own. Once you choose a inline water heater company to go with, they will be able to determine the size and model that will be best for your needs.
